Wohoo! Big deal you say? Well its a huge deal!

If you have been too busy binge-watching or writing the next blockbuster script you might have missed one important fact.  The Christian market is HUGE!  Financially speaking this is a great business opportunity. So, based on this fact alone, Santorum is a smart business man.

The Market Response

The market response to christian movies has been great so far. They have not been blockbusters, but they definitely received a good return for the investment. Everyone is happy when you invest a small amount and get a larger amount in return.

Hollywood’s Response

If its a great idea, why hasn’t  Hollywood  done it? They have, but haven’t succeded.  Below are couple  of studios that created a ‘faith-based’ division.

Sony: Affirm Films

Fox: Fox-Faith

One of the reasons might be the fact that christian movies are not global. They don’t translate well into other cultures. This is an important fact because there is a current trend towards globalization of entertainment.  According to the MPAA, in 2012 69% of box office contributions was international. Another reason for the failure is the lack of engagement with the christian audience. You just can’t create a movie and then slap a “christian” tag on it. Believe it or not, christians are a bit smarter than that.

Santorum’s Non-Monetary Reasons

Santorum said. “You have millions of Americans who don’t go to the movies because they don’t want to see, and they don’t want their children seeing, certain content,”

Don’t believe him?

Statistics don’t lie. The Dove Foundation did a study and found the following:

94% believe that offensive material in TV, Movies & the Internet is on the rise.

93% want to see more wholesome family entertainment made.

77% stated that 75% of today’s entertainment does not meet their expectations or reinforce the values important to them.

70% said that the amount of sex, violence and profanity in films bothers them.

Full report can be found at Here.

Santorum also added, “One area of the culture we’ve been woefully deficient is in film-making — and we have the opportunity to be a leader in a company that is going to be, really, the first fully-integrated studio. I’ve been saying for a long time that unless conservatives are engaged in the future and trying to shape culture, we’re in a losing battle.”

It will be interesting to see if he can do a better job than Hollywood studios in creating content is cultural relevant, cinematically creative and pleasing to a picky christian audience.
